The definition of Monotropism is a person’s tendency to focus their attention on a small number of interests at a time, tending to miss those things outside this attention tunnel.
It’s a processing style or a way of thinking. Autistic people and ADHDers are more likely to be monotropic than others.
Monotropism was developed by Dinah Murray and Wenn Lawson in the late 1990s. Murray noticed that due to their ability to focus so intently, they can complete complex tasks very quickly although disruptions to this can lead to emotion and mental strain. Like knocking down a house of cards and having to start all over again.
Monotropism isn’t limited to intellectual pursuits alone. It can manifest in various parts of life such as hobbies, relationships, and personal goals.
Other benefits include:
Enables Autistic people to focus on their passions which can have a positive impact on their ability to communicate.
It can help regulate their sensory system and feel in control
They gain deep knowledge and skills
Interests can help feel predictable and reassuring
